Mays told The Tampa Tribune in an
April interview, “One of the things that we
hope to do with ‘Pitchmen’ is to give people an appreciation of what we do. I don’t
take on a product unless I believe in it. I use
everything that I sell.”
It was that belief that set him on the
path to stardom, as he passionately believed
in Appel’s Orange Glo products. However,
true to his nature, the humble Mays took
almost no credit for his or the product’s success in that 2001 interview with Response.
“It’s actually funny how it all started by just
being in the right place at the right time,”
he said then. “Go figure.”
Mays is survived by his wife, son, three-year-old daughter Elizabeth, and previous
wife, Dolores. A funeral was held July 3 at
St Mary’s Church in his birthplace, McKees Rocks, Pa. ;
DRMA Announces Billy Mays Memorial Scholarship
SANTA ANA, Calif. — The Direct Response Marketing Alliance (DRMA), the leading independent
educational and networking organization serving the direct response industry, has established The
Billy Mays Memorial DRMA Marketing Scholarship, an annual scholarship to be awarded to students
demonstrating outstanding scholastic achievement and commitment to the pursuit of a career in
marketing.
The scholarship program is created to honor Mays’ memory and his role as a major ambassador for
the direct response industry. Entry requirements are still being worked out, but the DRMA is accepting
charitable donations from DR industry leaders and others interested in supporting the cause.
“Although we are still in shock over the loss of Billy, his memory will remain to inspire a new generation of entrepreneurs as they enter a new phase in their lives,” says John Yarrington, publisher of
Response Magazine and executive director of the DRMA. “Billy was the consummate marketer whose
dedication and passion for his;craft has forever influenced and impacted our business. To honor his
life achievements, we are proud to announce the Billy Mays Memorial DRMA Marketing Scholarship.”
